Music at St. Thomas'
At St Thomas' we are accustomed to hearing a string ensemble on our two largest days of the Christian year, Christmas and Easter, but this year we are adding another; All Soul's Day. On Monday, November 2 at 6:30 pm, we will be celebrating a Rite II sung eucharist in collaboration with our new ministry, Music on the Isle. The choir will sing the entire Fauré Requiem with the addition of a string ensemble and guest conductor, Rick Smith, with Jordan Markham on the organ. Fauré wrote and premiered the first version of this work in 1888 at a funeral in Paris but continued to augment and change the work until its completion led to its premier in 1890 as a concert version. Most people have only heard the Requiem as a concert piece with a full orchestra, choir and soloists, but Fr. Ryan and Jordan have placed each movement throughout the mass in its proper place while keeping the additional movements intact. This will not only accentuate the beauty of the mass itself but also give the listeners an appreciation for the historical meaning of this work as a whole.
In light of this massive undertaking, we are looking for someone or a few "someones" to help sponsor this evening's music by donating the cost of the musicians either in dedication of a loved one or as an anonymous offering. If you would like to sponsor this event, please reach out via email or talk with me after church on Sunday during coffee hour. Your gift to this endeavor will lead to an evening that will inspire and sooth many souls.

It was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the Lord, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever” … the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.
(2 Chronicles 5:13-14)
… be filled with the spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,…singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God
(Ephesians 5:19)
