Meals on Wheels

A few thoughts and words about my Meals on Wheels experience - the Gestalt

In 2003, my friend Bob had a bad motorcycle accident; so a group of coworkers at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institution, figured we would do his Meals on Wheels (MOW) route while he was recovering.  Bob recovered, but we (including Bob) keep on delivering- it is a team effort; every Thursday or Friday, I drive and am assisted by another volunteer, people that work at FWRI, the USF College of Marine Science, National Marine Fishery Service, Karilyn, other friends, and neighbors.   The process begins around 10:30, we arrive at the Sunshine Center- across the street from Mirror Lake.  We sign in and tell Skip we are ready to do it.  Cold food is in an ice chest, we check to be sure the container and route list numbers match and do the same with the hot food.  Then we load and hit the road; currently we deliver to, two high-rise apartment buildings (in the past our route was private homes scattered from 5th Ave N to 22nd Ave S and between the bay and MLK, 9th Street).  We serve 10 to 15 clients, each week offers a new twist; people go on vacation, have medical appointments, etc.   Some folks receive MOW because they are on disability, some are on a charity food program, and some purchase it.

If you are interested in receiving MOW,  you should get in touch with Neighborly Care Network, 12425 28 St N., Suite 200, St. Petersburg, FL 33716 ( 727) 573-9444. They are the administrators and are very efficient in coordinating MOW deliveries. Each day you can receive a hot meal and side items, the cost per day is less than $6.00. Food is checked to meet dietary recommendations; and I have had inspectors ride with me; they test the food temperatures to see the cold stays cold and the hot stays hot.

The experience of delivering MOW is rewarding to me personally, I do a small thing that does not take a lot of time and preparation. The vast majority of the people we serve are very grateful and thankful that they are receiving a meal.  Last week in Luke’s Gospel, the focus was on being a good neighbor.  Meals on Wheels depends on volunteer neighbors to deliver the food.  I see many neighbors every week at the Sunshine Center. Often, a church or business has adopted a route for a day of the week (Monday through Friday); our group consists of about ten and we do two days every week.

“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."  John 21: 15

If you are interested in feeding some lambs, let’s have a conversation. Walt Jaap
